POSITION SUMMARY

The City of Pittsburgh's Department of Innovation and Performance is looking for an intern with experience in data analysis, coding and geospatial analysis. This knowledge is essential for all applicants.

Accepted Interns will work directly with the Analytics & Strategy Team, as well as the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center and other City Departments as needed.

Note:  This position is posted on a continuous basis to cover internship opportunities through Spring of 2018.  Application Deadlines for Summer, Fall and Spring are listed below:

  • Summer 2017 (May-Aug) - the deadline has passed
  • Fall 2017 (Sep-Dec) - August 28, 2017
  • Spring 2018 (Jan-April) - December 11, 2017

Salary: $9.00 - $11.00 per hour

Union: Non-Union.

REQUIREMENTS

  • For paid internships, applicants are required to present verification of City residency at time of filing the application and must remain a resident throughout internship. For unpaid internships, City residency is not required.

QUALIFYING REQUIREMENTS:

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.  You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE: None required for this position. 
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Must be currently enrolled and taking classes in an accredited college or university undergraduate or graduate program in Data Science/Analysis, Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field; OR have graduated from such a degreed program within the last six (6) months. 
  • EQUIVALENCY: None permitted for this position.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES

Contributes to departmental goals by completing assigned tasks and projects.

  • Coordinates work in conjunction with project timelines.
  • May collect regional data from national sources for the Pittsburgh region.
  • May prepare and publish Open Data sets.
  • May research best practices for municipal applications.
  • May develop applications (coding, programming).
  • May analyze statistical data, complete surveys, perform research and develop reports.  
  • May provide general administrative support to staff.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
